Case Study: Gwynt y Môr
The Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm is RWE Innogy UK’s flagship project and at the time of commissioning was the second largest wind farm anywhere in Europe. The £2billion + project, situated in Liverpool Bay off the north coast of Wales, consists of 160 Siemens 3.6MW turbines with a combined power output of 576MW. The project took 2 years to complete, running from 2013-2015, and when at full generating capacity, is capable of supplying the average energy needs of approximately 400,000 homes. Throughout all stages of the construction (from pre-assembly to commissioning) Global Wind Service (GWS) has been a preferred supplier of turbine technicians, expertise and services.
The component parts for the 160 turbines were delivered in stages to the pre-assembly site in Mostyn, North Wales. Global Wind Service technicians joined the client’s ground staff to carry out the pre-assembly works ensuring that each and every turbine component was complete and correctly installed prior to load-out on to the installation vessels.
Craning and Lifting Support
When pre-assembly had been finalised, our experienced technicians were engaged alongside the client’s lifting crews to load-out the tower sections, nacelles, hubs and blades on to the waiting installation vessels.
Successful turbine installation requires an experienced and well-organised team with a solid understanding of best practices. Global Wind Service technicians brought exactly that to the Gwynt y Môr project where they worked alongside the client’s installation crews to ensure that all 160 turbines were safely and efficiently installed.
Mechanical and Electrical Completion
Once all the main turbine components were installed, great care and attention was paid to ensure that all mechanical and electrical works had been carried out in accordance with the manufacturers’ specifications and that all systems were ready to be handed over to the final commissioning teams. Global Wind Service supplied competent and experienced technicians to further support the client with these tasks.
The last stage of the installation process was the final commissioning of the turbines before official sign-off and handover to the project owners. Our dedicated commissioning technicians supported the client’s commissioning specialists in conducting the final checks and assessments to ensure that the turbines were 100% ready to hand-over for power production.
