Global Wind Service (GWS) are very proud to announce our first contract in South Africa. The Sere wind farm owned by Eskom (the South African state-owned electricity group) is a 100MW development on the 3,700 ha site near Vredendal in the Western Cape approximately 300km North of Cape Town.
The project will consist of 46 Siemens 2.3MW turbines with a hub height of 115m and a rotor diameter of 108m. The construction phase is due to start in the second half of 2013 and is scheduled to be supply electricity to the grid by the first half of 2014.
Sere, which takes its name from the Nama word for ‘cool breeze’, is Eskom’s first utility-scale wind farm and is predicted to save an estimated 252,603 tonnes of carbon every year.
The Sere project is an excellent opportunity for GWS to make strong inroads in to the South African market and we hope that more large-scale project will follow in the years to come.
